Background of JoMo Ingredients and Formulation

JoMo joint pain relief is 100 per cent shellfish freeJoMo was created by one of the lead orthopedic surgeons for an NBA basketball team, who worked with health professionals and nutritional chemists to develop this maximum-strength joint relief and cartilage support formulation for joint pain sufferers, athletes and "active lifestylers," as well as those suffering from joint stress due to overweight and obesity.*

When formulating JoMo, the objective was to create the most effective formulation for supporting joint rehabilitation and pain relief, providing inflammation support as well as overall health benefits. This meant avoiding all artificial ingredients, additives or fillers that are not consistent with the JoMo Company Philosophy of purity of ingredients. We're industry professionals but we also had personal experience with joint pain and arthritis: our JoMo formulation had to be of the highest quality that we could personally recommend and support.

Glucosamine (HCI) 2000 mg (Non-GMO/Non-Shellfish)

JoMo glucosamine is vegetable basedJoMo provides an extra-strength, 2000 mg daily dose of glucosamine for maximum joint support, pain management and maintenance of healthy cartilage.*

Glucosamine is naturally found in the body, a component of cartilage that acts as a cushion between the bone ends in a joint.

The Mayo Clinic gives glucosamine an "A" rating for osteoarthritis of the knee and a high rating for osteoarthritis generally, while chondroitin receives an "A" rating for osteoarthritis. The Mayo Clinic notes that "The consensus of expert and industry opinion supports the use of chondroitin and its common partner agent, glucosamine, for improving symptoms and stopping (or possibly reversing) the degenerative process of osteoarthritis."16 The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons adds that recent studies appear to support the idea that glucosamine and chondroitin relieve osteoarthritis pain.17 Learn More

More on Glucosamine

Healthy cartilage is "wet," filled with fluid that keeps it slick and slippery so the bone ends can slide against each other easily. But the fluid doesn't just take up residence in the cartilage and sit there; it has to be "pulled" into the cartilage from the space surrounding the joint (the joint capsule) and held there. Molecules called proteoglycans do just that.

You can imagine cartilage as being a tiny fishing net made up of interwoven strands of collagen. The proteoglycans are molecules that are wrapped around and through these strands so they can hold on tight to the netting and won't be washed away. It's the proteoglycans' job to "drink in" and hold on to joint fluid that flows into the cartilage from the joint capsule. When the cartilage is puffy and full of fluid, it does an excellent job of protecting the bone ends from wear and tear and absorbing the shock of movement. However, when stress is placed on the joint (think of your knee joint when you take a step), much of the fluid in the cartilage is squeezed out and returns to the joint capsule. The proteoglycans do their best to hold on to at least some of this fluid, and when the pressure is released, they quickly drink up much of the fluid that returns.

A problem occurs if the cartilage netting begins to "fray" and the proteoglycans lose their grip and float off into the joint fluid. With fewer molecules in place drinking in fluid, the cartilage will dry out, thin, crack and even wear through - in other words, arthritis will develop.

Glucosamine is a building-block of these proteoglycans, which means its essential for healthy cartilage and joints. And its mere presence stimulates the production of more proteoglycans. Glucosamine speeds up production of both proteoglycans and collagen and helps keep cartilage from breaking down by normalizing cartilage metabolism. Thus it helps the body repair damaged or eroded cartilage and prevent the cartilage from being damaged in the first place.

Many tens of millions of people worldwide with arthritis and joint pain use glucosamine and chondroitin (see section below on chondroitin for a full explanation), and studies show that both glucosamine and chondroitin can help reduce osteoarthritis pain and improve joint function.1 Research also indicates that glucosamine and chondroitin help support the body as it builds and repairs cartilage2 partially by promoting the production of proteoglycans. The more glucosamine that is present, to a certain limit, the greater the support and protection of the joints, since there is increased potential for cartilage production at the molecular level.

JoMo's chondroitin is:

More on Chondroitin
Chondroitin sulfate is a natural substance found in the body that, among other things, helps draw fluid into the proteoglycans that keep the cartilage moist and healthy. Chondroitin serves as the "backbone" of the proteoglycan molecule and is a component of the extracellular matrix (which gives structural support to cells, aids in cell-to-cell communication and has other functions). It also inhibits the actions of certain "cartilage-destroying" enzymes, thus affording the cartilage some protection.

Recent international double-blind studies have shown that glucosamine and chondroitin supplements provide pain relief for people with moderate to severe osteoarthritis of the knee. The Mayo Clinic notes that, "The consensus of expert and industry opinion supports the use of chondroitin and its common partner agent, glucosamine, for improving symptoms and stopping (or possibly reversing) the degenerative process of osteoarthritis."16 The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons adds that recent studies appear to support the idea that glucosamine and chondroitin relieve osteoarthritis pain.17 Learn More

MSM 500 mg

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is a naturally-occurring compound found in vegetables, fruits, grains and green plants.3 MSM contains the mineral sulfur, which is an important building block for cartilage and joints. MSM has been shown to be effective - both alone and in conjunction with glucosamine - in supporting joint health. In studies conducted in the United States and abroad, when compared to placebo, MSM produced improvements in pain and joint function in men and women suffering from osteoarthritis.4

Type II Collagen ingredientType II Collagen 50 mg

JoMo is one of the few liquid joint support supplements to include type II collagen, which is a key component of cartilage and therefore is vital to joint health.5

A growing body of evidence indicates that type II collagen can be of value in relieving the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, and possibly other forms of arthritis.*

In an early study, 10 volunteers suffering from rheumatoid arthritis were given type II collagen for 2 months.6 Six of the 10 enjoyed a substantial improvement in symptoms, which was measured by their grip strength, ability to walk a certain measured distance, the amount of morning stiffness from which they suffered, and other indicators of disease.

This was followed by a larger study, involving 60 people with active and severe rheumatoid arthritis who were given either type II collagen or a placebo for three months.7 Compared to those who received the placebo, the ones who took type II collagen saw a reduction in the number of swollen and tender joints - and four of those taking type II collagen enjoyed a complete remission of disease!

A study published in the Journal of Arthritis and Rheumatism tested wither or not type II collagen would be helpful for the youngster who suffer from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.8 The results of this study were positive: 12 weeks of treatment with type II collagen lead to a 61% reduction in number of swollen joints, and a 54% drop in the number of tender joints, in 8 of the 10 volunteers.

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) 50 mg

Vitamin C is necessary for the growth and repair of tissues, including collagen, an important component of cartilage. Vitamin C also provides antioxidant protection for joint tissues, destroying free radicals that can damage cells and tissues and trigger inflammation.*

Vitamin D 2000IU ingredientVitamin D 2000IU

Each dose of JoMo contains 2000IU of vitamin D.

Vitamin D is considered essential for bone health. More and more research is pointing towards vitamin D's beneficial effect on arthritis sufferers with vitamin D deficiencies being reported in patients with osteoarthritis.

Vitamin D also plays a role in inflammation management and maintaining an effective immune response.*

Manganese (Sulfate) 2 mg

Manganese is a mineral essential for normal bone structure and the manufacture of cartilage. When animals were given manganese-deficient diets, they developed malformations in both bones and cartilage.9

Manganese is also a component of the antioxidant enzyme called manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), one of the primary enzymes that "eats up" potentially harmful oxidizing species. As such, MnSOD is an important antioxidant defense in nearly all cells exposed to oxygen. People with arthritis tend to have low levels of MnSOD, which helps protect the joints from damage during inflammation.

Because of its antioxidant and bone-building properties, manganese is often combined with glucosamine and chondroitin for the relief of arthritis and joint pain - and practical experience is backed up by scientific research. For example, a 2000 study published in Osteoarthritis and Cartilage found that the combination of glucosamine, chondroitin and manganese significantly improved symptoms in people with mild-to-moderate arthritis of the knee.10 And in 1999, researchers from the Naval Special Warfare Group Two tested the effects of manganese, glucosamine and chondroitin in 34 male members of the U.S. Navy diving and special warfare community who were suffering from degenerative joint disease and pain in the knees or low back, and found that the trio of supplements relieves symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knees11

Superfruit Antioxidants

JoMo includes "Superfruit" antioxidants in its formulation for inflammation support and an overall health response.*

Antioxidants are substances or nutrients that prevent or slow oxidative damage to the body. When our cells use oxygen, they naturally produce free radical byproducts that can cause tissue or cellular damage. The body has it's own built-in antioxidant defenses, but they can sometimes be overwhelmed.

Antioxidants - whether produced by the body or obtained from foods or supplements - "mop up" the dangerous free radical substances, helping to prevent damage to tissues in the joints and elsewhere. Antioxidant nutrients also enhances the bodies immune defense, reduces inflammation and lowers the risk of infection and perhaps certain types of cancer as well.

Ingredient - pomegranate extract as antioxidantUltra-Concentrated Pomegranate Extract as Antioxidant

Pomegranates and pomegranate juice are a rich source of antioxidants12 and may possess even more antioxidant power than green tea. Pomegranates have some of the strongest physiological effects of any plant compound.

Pomegranate extract may be able to prevent the onset or progression of osteoarthritis. In an animal study, researchers deliberately induced arthritis in mice and gave them a pomegranate extract.13 They found that the pomegranate extract reduced the number of animals who developed arthritis and, in those who did develop it, slowed the appearance of arthritis and reduced the severity of the disease. In a human study, scientists treated samples of cartilage damaged by osteoarthritis with pomegranate fruit extract and found that it slowed cartilage degradation.14

Ingredient - black cherry as antioxidantUltra-Concentrated Black Cherry as Antioxidant

Studies suggest that Bing cherries (a type of black cherry) may prevent attacks of gout by lowering the levels of uric acid in the blood. (Gout strikes when excess uric acid in the blood is "stored" in the joint). A 2003 study at the University of California at Davis showed that when women consumed a serving of cherries, the levels of urate in their blood fell and they excreted more urate in their urine.15 With less urate in their blood, the risk of suffering from gout would likely drop.

The secret to the benefits of cherry juice may be the same antioxidant compound found in pomegranates: anthocyanins, which are the pigments that give cherries their bright red color. Scientists believe that consuming anthocyanins on a regular basis may help reduce the risk of heart attacks and stroke, in addition to warding off gout. They are currently investigating whether or not these pigments can be helpful in combating cancer.

What is an "ORAC Value"?

Antioxidant ratingDeveloped by scientists at the National Institutes of Health, the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) unit or "ORAC score" is a method of measuring the antioxidant capacity of different foods and supplements. It is believed that foods higher on the ORAC scale neutralize free radicals more effectively, thus slowing the oxidative processes that can contribute to joint pain, age-related degeneration and a great many diseases. Nutritionists suggest that people consume at least 3,000 to 5,000 ORAC units per day to exert a positive impact on health.

JoMo was subject to an independent ORAC test and valuation and awarded an ORAC value of 32,619 by Brunswick Laboratories, a leading independent testing laboratory.

JoMo is one of the few glucosamine and chondroitin supplements with type II collagen and Superfruit antioxidants to have independently sought a third party analysis of our ORAC value.
